There may be a number of substances, transparent surface, which were stained brown (as the final layer, or perhaps for all classes) ... Here are some possibilties:

... a clear polyurethane or a "medium of acrylic, etc, tinted brown with acrylic paint

... permanent white glue like Elmer's GlueAll (3 or diluted 4-1 with water) - or does "cutting" as ModPodge which is the same - with brown acrylic paint

... clear resin, stained with brown oil paint, the type of pipes (using the artist) ... Epoxy as a natural yellow with exposure to UV rays, too, but they are not using a UV-resistant polyurethane, etc., so that only a glance "could have caused the old coating"

It looks like what I saw was "Crystal" with a diluted mixture of umber and medium-sized windows, probably used no glue.
This mixture is sealed in the collage, it would be an aged appearance.

You can use acrylic or oil, but if the bond is great, I would recommend the medium of oil, allowing more time to work before it dries.
